改换博客地址

用这个博客已有一些时日。但一直感到有些不方便。第一,中文字符的显示问题。经常有学生告诉我看不到我的博客,只有改换解码方式才能看到。第二,大陆封锁了整个blogspot.com。我们的博客在大陆都看不到。很失望。因而我改用另一个博客网 http://teachchinese.blog.edu.cn 同时我也在尝试使用播客,见http://podlesp.podbean.com 及其它几个博客地址。

Here are the steps:
1. Find a podcast hosting site with rss feed (xml). The one I found is a Chinese one. http://popbean.com http://shockpod.com http://podomatic.com http://lifepop.com They all offer some space, not big but good enough to podcast a few audio and video clips.

2. Register an account.
3. Create an audio file. Upload to your site. (Use MS Sound Recorder in Accessory. You should save it as a mp3 file in order to upload to podcast.)

Reflections on the International Conference on Teaching Chinese (Hongkong)

Modernizing the teaching of Chinese language is the theme of this conference. Many well-known experts and scholars came to the conference and share their experience and researches to the conference. At the end of the conference, participants and organizer initialized a new organization called "Association of Modernization of Chinese Language Education". However, throughout the conference, one can easily realize that it is more a conference on teaching Chinese as a foreign language. The topics are more all focused on teaching non native speakers to learn Chinese. Therefore, it doesn't really match the title. (先天不足) Teaching Chinese as a foreign language is only one section of Chinese language education, yet it takes about 80% of the organization. They have a lot to do to involve others to participate.

From the conference, I learned many new techniques in teaching Chinese. Considering the fact that the new technologies keep coming up, should we keep up with the advancement of technology? Shall we view them as opportunities, and how shall we meet this challenge? My point is that no matter what technology we use in teaching, our purpose is to improve our teaching and learning rather than any other purposes. From this understanding, it is clear that our focus is not the technology itself rather how to use technology to improve our teaching and learning. Teachers/educators can use whatever technologies they feel comfortable or appropriate to their teaching in classroom. In my teaching practice, I care more about the outcome of student language learning which including reading and writing. Of course, the format of media is also in consideration.

IPod and podcasting (I)

Next semester, one ESL class and one of my Chinese class will start to use iPod in class. It is going to be quite exciting. I already downloaded some audio files from itune. I can make my own audio files and upload to the school web site. Using blogger.com to link to these audio files for download, since it can record the rss feeds for updates.

Today, I downloaded itune at apple.com and installed the program. After I started the itune program, a whole new world was presented before my eyes. I thought that it was just music or some audio files. To my surprise, it contains all kinds of subjects including all topics in education of all levels. I browsed some of the sections. The audio quality was very impressive. No wonder that iPod becomes popular so fast. Now the question is how to integrate this technology in education. I would like to see more applications for classroom teaching.
